Asumptions assumptions! This is the first time I recall Apple announcing a product and we can't even configure it for several months. Makes no sense. Working any backlog of older generation never stopped Apple before. Even the G5 models are removed the Apple store.

Um, whatchtalkinboutwillis? Apple has a looonng history of announcing products that aren't available. They've actually gotten much better about it in the last few years. Here are a couple recent examples: the MBP was announced at Macworld and it was ~45 days before there was any inventory. The new iPod shuffle was announced along with the new iPods but not shipping until October.

Re: backlog, I'm referring to existing corporate customers who are probably yelling to be first in line on the intel XServes, not the old ones. This is a low volume item and I'd guesstimate that they ship <10,000 per quarter (certainly nowhere near 100,000.)
