Why would they risk an all-out war with the US when they are so vulnerable militarily and economically?? Most Russians realize that their problems primarily reside in the corruption of their own leadership who have smuggled BILLIONS of dollars in IMF money's into their own private Swiss bank accounts. And the fact that they use the US dollar as a defacto currency creates the reality that any move to cut their own throats will be short-lived.

Yeah, they can try nationalism, but if you thought the Kosovo problem was bad in Serbia, try on a few of the nationalities that exist within Belarus and Russia proper.

Btw, did you know that Azerbijian, a former Russian republic with GOBS of black gold is involved in the "partnership for peace" program, the precursor step to officially joining NATO?? Press the US too hard and we can make life REAL interesting for the Russians.

Same goes with the Muslim fundamentalists who are getting frisky in China's NW region. They can be stirred up even more in such a way to cause them to focus more on their own problems than trying to stir up trouble in the Balkans and elsewhere.

Lots of buttons can be pushed on both sides. The issue is whether gov'ts will be inclined to limit the rhetoric that their populations feed upon.
