Makita also makes their own production equipment.

I think what it boils down to is that companies/people who are very meticulous about quality tend to take control of their production because otherwise they cannot build the kind of products that they want to. And this in turn, if they are successful, becomes a competitive advantage.

A friend of mine started a pet carryon bag business. Initially she outsourced to China. But she ran into quality control issues. Then she hired people to check onsite before shipping, but that wasn't reliable. Then she built her own factory in Hong Kong, but she had to fly back and forth too much. So finally she moved her whole operation to NYC.

When she was outsourcing to China her bags went for 3x- 10x those prices and she sometimes gets custom order for up to $3500 each.

That's what happens when you care about quality and are willing to do whatever it takes to make your vision real.
