Telecom Equip : Merrill Lynch is out with a sector report following news that global carrier spending in 2002 is expected to decline by 18% with another 2% decline in 2003 (Merrill is forecasting a 4% increase in equip revenues). Firm sees most of their large names as dead money until there is some relief from capex cuts (which is not expected until late 2003); however, firm also sees limited downside at these levels for LU, NT, ALA, ERICY, and NOK; notes that CSCO has minimal exposure to capex given its enterprise sales.
