I'm skeptical on the elderly white woman thing .... but as for "Maybe there's wisdom in taking the war on terrorism to the Middle East", it is interesting that attempts to make attacks here seem to have increased as fighting in Iraq has wound down (for us anyway). For awhile, jihadis wanted to fight Americans there, now they need to come here to attack us again. Its the flypaper idea.
