No you use rectangular pieces of metal/material in identical sizes/volumes to calculate the coefficient of friction for the material in various finishes.

Of course you could just ask those hunters you referenced earlier and look at the pellet holes in a duck and see there are less feathers embedded in the meat with plated shot.
