Hi John,
I know what you mean. I too get a certain amount of unwanted e-mail.
First, let me point out that internet based marketing is only one of GBD's revenue generating streams. Remember they sell services which include telephone call centres and print mail marketing etc. Now, in answer to your question, they use a program called e.Globel to reach their client's target customer base. I'm not an expert but it appears that e.Globel is selective and can be used to communicate marketing info to GBD's client's customers who already want specific product info or are very reliant on electronic based communications. My impression is that GBD does not take a list of e-mail addresses and blanket it with advertisements. It sounds like they have a more controlled and targeted approach via this e.Globel program.

I copied the following from the Bidding On Bay Street review. I hope it helps.

"Globel's new exclusive Internet-based product is what gives extra zest to the company's story. e.GLOBEL is an Internet based direct mail program which can be utilized as a supplement to traditional direct mail campaigns or "as a standalone project to reach a discrete segment of the market." The first in its kind in Canada in use by a company like Globel, e.GLOBEL allows companies to send electronic direct mail messages containing either text or multi-media messaging in HTML format to a pre-determined group of opt-in recipients. e.GLOBEL utilizes patented Flo technology through an exclusive licensing agreement with "Media Synergy", one of Canada's leading developers of Internet applications. It is designed for companies with customers who wish to receive communication by e-mail and by those companies with already established regular, solicited communications with their target audience, which would like to add on-line content to the mix. And if this month's annual convention of Direct Marketers is any
indication, a growing number of DM clients will be looking for e-commerce solutions, or risk peril by resisting the trend."
