Re: Just speculating

How about just taking the PR at face value:

Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news), the world's No. 1 PC maker, said on Thursday it no longer offers the option of installing Linux ( - ) on its personal computers, citing a lack of demand for the alternative operating system.

What a lot of MSFT-bashers don't seem to realize is that in the consumer space marketing is everything. How else do you think KO convinces millions every day to pay anywhere from .25 to over $1 for a few pennies worth of sugar water? In the consumer space no marketing = no sales. It's that simple. Who is marketing Linux to the consumer? The answer is nobody and that's why there's no demand.

MSFT and its partners will spend hundreds of millions on marketing to launch Windows XP this Fall. This for a product that is starting with very high brand awareness. Such is the reality of marketing in the consumer space. Good luck if you think anything is going to threaten the Windows franchise here anytime soon.
