I checked the official records in Bush's files to see what really happened in Alabama. He drilled a couple days in Oct and Nov before heading back to Texas. The unit there had regularly schededled weekend drills in Oct and Nov. Bush drilled on other days besides where most people were doing what are called UTA drills. There were people at the unit 24/7 like all reserve units. This was true where I drilled with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 23 at Ft. Belvoir, VA. There was a skeleton active duty staff there all the time. Bush drilled on two days with a skeleton crew. I have no idea what he worked on, but he got the drill credits, somebody saw him and recorded it and submitted it to the ANG for their records. He probably read manuals or performed some kind of self study. What else are you going to do? It isn't like that was his regular unit or could fly. Maybe he helped the active staff out with some of their paperwork or evaluations or something. But there is no question. He did show up because its in the records.
