This could prove a historic day for Texans

Today's the day that could send Texas Gov. George W Bush to a new destiny as 43rd president of the United States. It's a moment Texans should cheer, having close experience with a first family that genuinely cares about public service and high standards. But there are also many down-ballot races across the country that will determine the shape of American politics for at least the next four years.
Several factors could provide clues to the outcome of this jumble of races.
First, pay special attention to Florida, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Those states could report early. If any patterns develop there, voters could anticipate the presidential election's course.
Second, keep track of Senate races in New York, Missouri, Minnesota, New Jersey and Delaware. Those contests may determine control of the Senate, where Republicans now have a 54-46 margin. And follow the numbers in elections for the House, where Republicans hold a 223-210 margin.
Third, closely follow down-ballot races. Contests for the Texas House and Senate will decide which party controls each chamber during the 2001 Legislature, which will draw new congressional districts.
Some experts predict that turnout will dip below 50 percent. We hope that is wrong. We thus offer these endorsements as a reminder to vote and as a resource. Voters must make their own decisions, but we hope that Texas does not find itself among the states where voter participation declines again.
