The thing I like about the ECNC device is that the merchant website never sees your card number.

That's exactly how the American Express Private Payments thing works. The only number you provide to the merchant is the one-time Private Payment number. That's all they see.

The other trend is of course smart cards. Both AmEx and Visa now offer smart card credit cards and offer the smart card readers too. Amex will give them away free up until at least the end of the year.

Smart card readers can be produced in China for $5.00 now, and the less-sophisticated smart cards themselves are cheaper than that. And because they are significantly more secure than mag stripe cards, I can't even fathom any financial institution investing significant money in trying to add security to the mag stripe cards. If they're going to start mucking with their infrastructure, they're going to make a radical change.

Just my two cents, but I think ECNC's technology is like putting an expensive new lock on a door whose hinges are broken.
