Metricom Wins State Approval for Usage of Southern and Central California Street Lights
Calif. Public Utilities Commission Grants Metricom Permission to Use Utility Company Poles
LOS GATOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1998--Metricom, Inc. (NASDAQ:MCOM - news) today announced that it has been granted approval by the California Public Utilities Commission to use Southern California Edison Company's (AMEX:SCEq - news; Edison) power poles and street lights for its Ricochet wireless network.

Metricom installs shoebox-size radio repeaters on utility poles to provide its Ricochet wireless data communications services.

''In order to deploy our network infrastructure in major metropolitan areas, we must first obtain agreements with utilities to use their utility distribution poles and street lights,'' said Kirk Wampler, Metricom director of Right of Way.

''In California, that challenge is compounded by the need to win approval from the state Public Utilities Commission. With this significant milestone behind us, Metricom will concentrate on completing the Right of Way acquisition process in Southern California.''

Section 851 of the Public Utilities Code states that no public utility shall lease property without first securing authorization from the PUC. Metricom currently has an initial ten-year lease agreement with Edison that enables it to use available space on Edison's poles in Southern and Central California.
