New Role for I2O

EE Times, March 10, 1997, Issue: 944
"PCI bus heads for volume territories" - By Bernard Cole

Here is an excerpt from the above article...

Interestingly, the I2O (Intelligent I/O) specification and Intel's i960RP, both originally conceived as ways to resolve I/O problems in servers, are now being used to extend the interrupt and slot availability of the PCI protocol. This allows Compact-PCI, with eight to 10 slots, to support an additional eight to 10 slots per I/O interface.

"We have been quite surprised at the popularity of the i960 as a bus
extender in the embedded environment," said Jim Kearns, marketing
manager at Intel's Enterprise Computing I/O Operations (Chandler,
Ariz.). "That's not what we designed it for."
