NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Best Buy Co. reported an 8.7% rise in second-quarter profit Tuesday, trumping expectations for a fall in that number, as international demand and sales of flat-panel television and video game products surged.

It also raised the bottom end of its profit forecast range for the year and said it has bought a minority stake in Carphone Warehouse Group Plc (UK:CPW: news, chart, profile) , Europe's top cell phone retailer, as the largest U.S. electronics retailer rolls out its Best Buy Mobile stores and expands in Europe.

Best Buy shares had jumped 4.3% to $46.46 by midday. Shares of Carphone Warehouse rose 6% in London.
