I think there is room for both. I certainly am comfortable purchasing a computer directly as long as it has a good reputation like Dell, but I will not order software or other complememtary software directly as I don't want to wait. There is a ton of business after the computer is purchased that CPU can get. So if they miss the initial sale of the system, they can pick up a lot of secondary stuff.

The largest difference in direct vs retail I would have to think is in profit margin. Direct sales do not require a large floor space and such other overhead. But they do not have the volume or the impulse buying that can add a significant amount.
