Did the Americans know about this man before the US military went into Iraq. Was the Al-Mahdi army causing any problems for the US? From what you said it is clear that the army was thorn in Saddam's side and that Saddam had kept this army under control.

Now because of Bush's policies, the problem is now a US problem. Also, there are now two violent groups targeting the US: Al Qaeda and Al Mahdi. That is what I read as what you said.
