Ampex lawsuits, In the last few years Ampex has generated a great deal of its income through royalty payments for past abuse of it's patents. Many of these only resulted after litigation. According to 1995 Annual Report--letter to shareholders: "Regrettably during the year, it became necessary for us to intitiate a lawsuit against a major manufacturer of VHS video recorders and television recievers alleging infringement of Ampex patents." It goes on to say that they were expecting it to go to trial during the year and cost the company up to 3 million dollars. As this is a lawsuit against VHS infringement instead of earlier 8 mm tape, I'd guess the sums involved are really large. Also I wouldn't expect a company to fight Ampex (given their court track record) unless there was a really lot at stake.
