I think you misunderstood Charles. He meant that Greece's per capita income is 50% of the US per capita income. I don't have exact numbers at hand but Germany should be much closer to the US than the Greek level.

And concerning living standards in Europe: I think it isn't that easy to compare those. Our health and social care system is much better than in the US but we have higher unemployment and in some areas less "freedom". If you are rich you are probably better off in the US but for the middle and lower class Europe is the better place to be IMO. Of course, the downfall of this is that we have to pay much more money for health, unemployment and pensions. And since the entire society in Europe is getting older and older because of low birth rates it's becoming more and more difficult to finance all those things. There have been already severe cuts in some areas and I believe there will be many more in the future.

BTW, I saw this report on the Druge Report today:

While Buchanan is of course exaggerating there's much truth in it IMO. Those problems will be big challenges for Europe in the future.
