There is a point to be made about brand differentiation. Because of the infamous "Intel Inside" program, many PC manufacturers felt that it diminished their brands and essentially commoditized the market. Now, PC vendors are using differentiation strategies (new designs/colors/bundles etc...) to position their brand over a competitor.

I don't think you can deny that Zip was/is one of the most successful product introductions in the computer industry, so to use a brand like Zip that has such strong consumer appeal as a way to attract attention to your product is very useful. I agree with you in a sense, the customer is ultimately then going to decide if that PC delivers on their expectations. Zip is merely a foot in the door to attract awareness to a customer's PC.
