>>iPhone will be available in an 8GB model for 269 pounds sterling and will work with either a PC or Mac. Three new iPhone tariffs will be available from O2 starting at 35 pounds, which all include unlimited anytime, anywhere mobile data usage and, in a market first, free unlimited use of the UK's largest single public Wi-Fi network, covering over 7,500 cafes, restaurants, airport lounges, pubs and other locations across the UK.<<

I think the UK pricing is fine. We have to remember that the price there includes the VAT (Value Added Tax) of 17.5%. And the free use of a large national WiFi network is a pretty good bonus.
It would have been a very bad move for Apple to have released a 3G phone in Europe at this time. They just had to deal with the fallout from reducing the price here. Imagine how people would have howled if suddenly a better iPhone became available elsewhere, but not here.
In my opinion, Apple is doing quite a good job with their entry into an entirely new and highly competitive market. Of course they can't please everyone, but I think they've avoided a lot of landmines that other companies trying to do the same thing would have stepped on.
