Andreas Re...That's true but I doubt that Intel won't add new features to the P4 core in the meantime (HT is already planned by the end of the year). And according to Van Smith from Van's Hardware Hammer will probably be single core at first:<<<<<<<

Nonetheless, Hammer will have a sizeable lead on IPC and performance, as 64 bit without proper software doesn't improve performance much. AMD can easily have the public percieve Hammers better performance as attributeable in part to 64 bits. What happens if P4 comes out and doesn't increase IPC by much, which will happen if INtel doesn't make a lot of other improvements to P4. Another failure ??????? More proof that Intel just isn't that good anymore?

Of course it will benefit AMD. But it would be even better if IA64 turned out to be a complete failure without Intel having a backup strategy.<<<<<<<<

If you recall, Intel did have a back up strategy with Rambus, I845 chipset, with SDRAM. However Intel still had a disaster on its hands, and lost a lot of face. The same would be even more likely here, because Intel won't be as quick to dump IA-64, as Rambus, because if IA-64 goes, you can bet Barrett will be counting his days until retirement.
