MEDIA ADVISORY: Appian Communications Demonstrates Industry's First Implementation of Multiple Services for Ethernet-over-SONET with Service Level Guarantees
DENVER, Aug 28, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Participates in the ONI Systems Operation: Interoptical Program; Presents Technical Paper on Appian's Breakthrough Optical Data Protection(TM)at NFOEC 2000.
Appian Communications, innovators of award-winning intelligent networking products for the new optical edge of service provider networks, will demonstrate for the first time several key features of its premier product suite, the Optical Services Activation Platform(TM) (OSAP) 4800, August 28-30, in booth #817 at the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) in Denver. Appian will demonstrate the industry's first multi-service capabilities for Ethernet-over-SONET that let providers capture substantially expanded service revenues at a fraction of current costs by delivering multiple services on a single physical Ethernet interface with separate, independent service level guarantees for each service. Appian will also demonstrate its unique capabilities for supporting multiple customers across a single Ethernet interface with bandwidth guarantees and other key OSAP features such as soft-tuneable bandwidth, linear APS (automatic protection switching), remote provisioning and unprecedented provider and customer manageability. Demonstrations will run continuously throughout the exhibit hours.
In addition, Appian will join the ONI Systems(TM)Corp. (NASDAQ: ONIS chart, msgs) Operation: Interoptical program at NFOEC which includes Brocade(R) (NASDAQ: BRCD chart, msgs) and Corvis Corp. (NASDAQ: CORV chart, msgs). Premier networking vendors will showcase optical, multi-vendor, end-to-end network solutions for carriers.
Also at NFOEC, Appian's Director of Product Management Jonathan A. Morgan will address "Migration to Data-Centric Networks" on Tuesday, August 29, at 1:30 p.m. His presentation will focus on Appian's breakthrough Optical Data Protection(TM) protocol (ODP), the data-centric optical local loop technology that substantially expands the transport potential of local access rings, enabling them to serve far greater numbers of customers while preserving the stringent reliability of the local loop's optical data transport. ODP brings SONET's market-proven survivability, management and scalability characteristics into highly-efficient packet switched networks.
Appian's OSAP 4800 lets providers and users immediately provision bandwidth as needed, enabling users to cost-effectively meet dynamic traffic peaks, launch strategic outsourcing initiatives such as Application Service Provider (ASP) outsourcing, and expand their network services in concert with organizational and market-driven needs. Equally important, Appian's OSAP enables service providers to translate their direct customer access and the core network's rich bandwidth into substantial, competitive new services and profit streams.
The OSAP 4800 replaces the Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) service delivery bottleneck in the access network with a new level of service deployment called "Etherband." Providing more flexible and scalable bandwidth beyond traditional access technologies, Appian's innovative Etherband architecture leverages the compelling economics and ubiquity of the industry's dominant technologies: Ethernet in the customer premise environment, and SONET and DWDM in the service provider transport network.
About Operation: Interoptical
Launched at SUPERCOMM 2000 by ONI Systems(TM) Corp., Operation: Interoptical is a program that highlights best-of-breed networking companies committed to developing optical, multi-vendor, end-to-end network solutions for carriers. Leading networking companies participating in Operation: Interoptical will showcase end-to-end interoperability across the network. As a result of this program, carriers can scale their network operations to support surging data traffic demand by dramatically reducing service provisioning times, improving service quality, and reducing operating costs -- overall simplifying service delivery.
About Appian Communications
Appian Communications, Inc. is a venture-backed optical networking startup formed to define the intelligent optical edge and enable new carrier services. Appian is developing an award-winning suite of intelligent and flexible products that solve the "sipping straw" access problem that separates businesses from cost-effective bandwidth capacity and service adaptability, and carriers from significant new revenues. Appian has been recognized atSUPERCOMM 2000's SUPERQuest Awards, was named a "Red Hot Startup" by America's Network, and was named one of Telecommunications Magazine's "Hot Startups to Watch in 2000."
