You probably can't directly purchase stock unless you're talking "greenmail" or some takeover strategy. Probably illegal to do a person-to-person transaction, ie without registration. Why not a broker? Decide what you want to pay, subtract 2x commission, and bid. The worst that could happen, the stock never returns to your bid level, and you'll be kicking yourself for being chintzy. If you're worried about broker's price predictability, if they give you the line, "Well its a complicated formula" etc., tell them to shove it, sign up at Schwab for a printed computation of the commission, based on purchase/sale price. Odd lots are easy these days, too, I've heard.
