To a certain extent it may has been fortuitous for Kerry that he didn't win the election. It may have already been too late to save the country from four years of Bush and Kerry would have likely been blamed if the wheels came off during his current tenure.

Bush's dopey policies may get the USA into pretty bad shape the next few years.

Possiblities:

Iraq drags on and on with no end in sight
Further misadventure in somewhere like Iran
A serious dollar collapse and $100+ a barrel oil
Real Estate bubble implosion
