This may or may not apply to what you're facing, but others may find it a useful link to keep in mind. . .

Apparently, people "misplace" the XP CDs that come with their computers so often that Microsoft has made a "universal" product key available.

All that's needed is to "borrow" a CD and use the key Microsoft published.

Of course, this only applies to those machines licensed for XP.

P.S. The link doesn't mention it, but OEM XP CDs come with four manufacturer specific files: OEMBIOS.BI_, OEMBIOS.CA_, OEMBIOS.DA_ and OEMBIOS.SI_

During installation, they become OEMBIOS.BIN, OEMBIOS.CAT OEMBIOS.DAT and OEMBIOS.SIG

If the CD you borrow doesn't match your computer, grab a copy of these four files from one that does.
