Bill,
I suspect that you're right that DWMT is only marginably superior under most circumstances.
However I think that the noisier the line then the better it will outperform DMT.
>>My general understanding was DWMT was software.
Strictly speaking it's not nor is DMT. ADSL broadcasts on copper wire over a very wide range of frequencies. Due to external interference ( such as radio ,etc) or due to imperfections in the wire, certain frequency ranges are unusable.
CAP treats the whole frequency range as a single data element. It has the difficult job of adjusting within the data element where the information is really located to avoid the bad spots. CAP is called a single-carrier technology due to the single data element.
DMT and DWMT both are mult-carriers. They subdivide the frequency range into small 4KHz sections called sub-channels.Each sub-channel is in effect a data element. Both technologies are able to determine the bad subchannels and avoid sending any data through those frequencies. The method of dividing the frequency ranges into sub-channels is what differs the two. DMT uses Fourier transforms while DWMT uses a wavelet transform. Wavelets simply give a better approximation to the ideal subchannels. They get much better performance around these "noisy areas" and hence are able to get more data through. The noisier the line the better their incremental impovements should be over their Fourier cousins. You can implement both techniques in either hardware or software.

Your PostScript is bothering me as well. As is the Westell flight over to Motorola. If there was 1 trial I would pick a fight to be in it would be Microsoft's. I hope no one's falling asleep or not watching the road over at Aware.
If I hear anything I'll be sure to post it.
Sorry if this is not the response you wished.
Jerome
