Coherent Announces Telecom Unit and Facilities Expansion

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Coherent, Inc. (Nasdaq: COHR), today announced the formation of a Telecom Business Unit, which will drive the Company's active and passive telecom product strategies. Operating from Coherent's Santa Clara, California headquarters, the Business Unit will draw on technology and resources from the semiconductor growth facility in Tampere, Finland, the semiconductor packaging and test center in Santa Clara, as well as the optical fabrication and coating plant in Auburn, California.

"The Business Unit will be the focal point for all our telecom market developments and investments," stated Dr. Bernard Couillaud, Coherent's President and Chief Executive Officer. "The Business Unit will assume responsibility for the recently announced ComEts(TM), our first telecom product approved for deployment."

The Company also announced a planned expansion at its Auburn, California site. Construction of an 80,000 square foot building has been approved with projected occupancy by year-end. "The additional space allows us to consolidate our optical fabrication, coating, and assembly of telecom componentry into a single facility," said John Ambroseo, President of Coherent's Laser and Auburn Groups and Executive Vice President of Coherent. "In addition, we have placed multiple orders for coaters used in the production of DWDM filters."
