Valve had a better business model for gaming from the jump and they have got the format down. They have attempted to build an ecosystem around linux and their Proton layer for Windows games, but so far they haven't gotten much traction. Steam Boxes were stillborn and the SMACHZ handheld died during COVID. With both Microsoft going the way of Apple with their walled garden approach, that just might be the opening linux needs to make gains on the desktop before they fade into irrelevancy. Steam has its warts. But I have used it for a couple of decades or so now. It has served Valve well, they have a stupidly profitable income per employee as a result.
