From my sense, it would appear that the pumping system brings cold water in from the bottom, where steam comes out of the top to the turbines:

If irradiated water was leaking out after being pumped in, I would think that would trigger some immediate alarms.

Since it appears the graphite control rods were inserted immediately, it's only a matter of time before the reactor core cools, if I understand the design properly. But the reactor core is toast and will have to be encased in a concrete sarcophagus and likely sent to the bottom of the deepest part of the oceans depths.
