Trouble with PBHG? Today's print version of the New York Times business section has an article "As value falls, PBHG funds suffer a wave of redemptions". The article points out that this year 11 of their twelve funds are down, that $480 million has been withdrawn which is about 6% of total assets. The article notes that short sellers are looking over the PBHG list of major holdings to see what they might have to unload.
The article also fairly notes that due to the PBGH style of taking large positions in small companies (ie 9.4% or more of WIND) that they take big swings. They were big winners during the 1990-1996 period and big losers this year (so far). Seems like some of their customers can only take the ride one way. My guess is that the most of the withdrawals are from the most recent joiners. However, if PBGH does get really pressured it could be bad for WIND (the stock) for a few months or longer.
