John; Should Obama get elected, he will have to get the troops out. The only question will be how to manage it. Yes of course, but if things come apart as we try to withdraw, what then? The Friedman piece is all about figuring stuff out now. IMO anything less than just being willing to give up on our effort in Iraq and concentrating our efforts in Afghanistan is a poor strategy - because efforts spent in Iraq take away from our ultimate chances for success in Afghanistan. Friedman seems to think because things are going better in Iraq - which they are - that there is still something salvageable there. From the Friedman piece; As a result, what we do next in Iraq — how and why — is barely getting discussed in the presidential campaign. My argument was that Friedman has an unrealalistic optimistic attitude towards Iraq by trying to separate it from the Afghanistan effort. A simplistic outlook by compartmentaling the issues in the ME - not unlike that of Bush's. In my mind as a long time NYTimes reader, Friedman has never had a clear understanding of Iraq. steve
