BAD NEWS FOR VITESSE. George Gilder, in his Gilder Technology Report, has removed Vitesse from his table of "ascendant techologies."

excerpt:

"Falling over the cliff of costs while maintaining performance, reducing power and increasing environment robustness, SiGe has the potential to seriously compromise the future of three companies that we have cited in various reports. Vitesse, Triquint, and Anadigics. These firms have experiened substantial price appreciation in the stock market, based on est. earnings per sahre growth of 30 - 35% over the next five years. Vitesse is building a new chip fab plant est to costt $70mil and operational sometime in 1998. Given the advantages in cost and performance of the SiGe chips, GaAs is now maturing and has beeen deleted from our Table of ascendant technoloies."
