I don't know where you get the idea I'm trying to sweep anything under the carpet. Is hanging one relevant commandment instead of the ten sweeping something under the carpet? I think it's trying to find a solution that meets everyone's needs. Isn't that what you said you wanted? Or should I focus instead on where you said one side had to crush the other?

Look, if people want to reconcile incompatible ideas they find a way to do it. Let's take evolution, for example. When faced with evolution vs. creation in seven days, most rational Christians struggle for a while and then eventually come around to the notion that the seven day thing wasn't literal and that works for them. It enables them to deal with the contradiction and move on. With regard to this issue, I can reconcile the contradiction by treating much the God stuff as ceremonial or historic or cultural. If that enables me to tolerate it rather than running to the ACLU, isn't that a good thing? Now I don't know what insight would work for those on the religious side of the argument, but I'd bet there is one, something that would enable them to accept some voluntary restrictions on religious demonstration, some equivalent of the seven day reconciliation. I don't know what that might be since I don't think like a believer, but I'd bet a motivated and creative religious person could come up with one just as I have so that we can all get past this war.
