Hi bentway; Re "The Yellow Rose of Texas" and other forgotten bits of Texas history.

Most people don't know that Mexican liberals fought for Texas and that Texas was allied with other Mexican states. Santa Ana wanted the "traitors" back and threatened to keep marching east until he got to Washington DC, if he had to. At the time the Mexican cavalry was considered the world's finest but his real threat didn't go further than New Orleans.

The only Mexican state that was able to maintain its independence from Mexico (really "Mexico City") was Texas. In particular, Texas was allied with Yucatan. The revolt in Yucatan meant that Yucatan was neutral during the Mexican American war. Also the Indians revolted in south Yucatan and maintained an independent state until their capital was finally conquered in 1901 (with the help of new technology, the machine gun and railroad). This was the famous "Caste War of the Yucatan". The fighting went on into the 1930s. See the wikipedia article:
en.wikipedia.org

But most Americans know the Texas revolution only from the liberal version which makes the Texans out to be pure evil. In fact, Santa Ana was executing a policy of "ethnic cleansing" and forcing all whites out of Texas. My recollection is that the Yellow Rose of Texas was essentially raped. His troops would have done better if they'd spent less time pillaging.
