From Barrons 1/25/99:

"Meanwhile, a handful of Japanese companies with considerable manufacturing and financial clout are thought to be working to develop this next generation of batteries, including, among others, Sony, Toshiba, Sanyo Electric and Matsushita. At least two Japanese companies have bought the Bellcore license, while others are pursuing competing technologies.

"It's likely that the Japanese will control the pace of the rollout of the technology in this industry, the way Intel controls the chip industry," predicts a veteran of the battery industry, who warns that no one should view the lack of announcements from the Land of the Rising Sun as evidence that the Japanese aren't making progress. "You have to remember that Sony kept a very low profile before it introduced the lithium ion battery."
