Rod, "Zip drives are the next 8-track tape". Hmmm I'm not sure whether you mean me to take this analogy seriously or rhetorically, but I'll byte. :-)

The 8-track tape was in a battle for standard status with the audio cassette. Each were trying to replace reel-to-reel. (Gosh, I'm dating myself here!) So wouldn't it be better to say the LS-120 is the 8-track to the Zip cassette?

Perhaps a better analog for a bear would be to call the Zip a DAT (Digital Audio Tape). These were primed to replace the cassette, but ended up a high-end nitch product for political reasons. (The consumer models are cripled to keep you from making perfect copies of digital audio CDs.)

Funny, but they want to do the EXACT same thing to recordable DVD!

Now, on the "competition" between Jaz and CD-R or CD-E, I would say that the compete for different customers. A Jaz owner is replacing Hard Disk space with a removable HD. CD-R is sold to an entirely different customer. One who wants a permanent backup medium, or wants to master his own CDs, or even copy audio tracks to create custum audio CDs (oops, guilty!)

I just don't see Jaz and CD-R as in competition. And CD-E is still years off.

HOWEVER, I DO say that Jaz will have more competition than the Zip. The Zip drive will become the standard MegaFloppy, locking out any competition. But Jaz owners do not have to exchange platters. This leaves the market open to competion. Anyone can develope a 1Gb removable HD and get in the game.

I used to worry that Segate would do exactly that. I am less worried since they signed up to manufacture Iomega Jaz carts.
