To all: Interesting post by Rick Cowles from comp.software.year-2000: ************************** Here's some 'hard numbers' from a major electric company (Hydro Quebec) to chew on - from their press release on Y2K: hydro.qc.ca Hydro-Quebec's Y2K budget is in the order of $CDN 60 millions. Modifications are required on over 350 information systems, over 20000 programs and applications, and about 15000 personal computers. Furthermore, the 895 automated control systems in the distribution network and production facilities also require attention. (Thanks to Yves Pellitier for the pointer to the news release and translation from French.) My comments: CDN$60 million seems in the right ballpark, even with the exchange rate, based on what I'm seeing at other major ElecCo's. The press release also says they expect completion by the end of 1998 (does this sound familiar?), with testing ongoing in 1999. This schedule seems extremely ambitious to me, given the scope of the work described above. But I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment. 895 control systems seems on the low side for a major ute, but at least they recognize and are investigating the issue. I've got a ton of other grim numbers from the electric business, but can't publish them yet.
