Ramtron says new chips set for manufacture

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., March 13 (Reuters) - Ramtron International Corp.
(NasdaqNM:RMTR - news) and Japan's Fujitsu Ltd said Monday they have successfully
developed technology for a new line of ferroelectric random access memory chips that can
be used for storing data on devices without power.

Ramtron's stock surged 67 percent on the news, ending 11-13/16 higher at 29-7/16.

Ramtron said the successful development means that Fujitsu will pay $2 million to Ramtron under a development and licensing
the companies reached in 1996. The new line of chips will be manufactured by Fujitsu.

Ramtron's chips are designed for use in a broad range of applications, including portable, hand-held electronic devices, smart
cards, electronic power meters, test instrumentation, factory automation, security systems and other applications.

Ramtron said the technology uses an advanced one-transistor and one capacitor memory cell design to lower the cost of
megabit-class FRAM memories.

The one-megabit prototype FRAM memory device combines existing technologies to create a fast read/write speed and the
ability to store information without power, Ramtron said.

Ramtron plans to use the new architecture to develop megabit-class FRAM memory products that are currently being defined.

Kazunari Shirai, electronic devices group president and Fujitsu board member, said: ``We anticipate that this market will grow
to more than $10 billion by 2005 and Fujitsu is targeting to be the major market supplier of these advanced semiconductor
devices.'
