I have the Panasonic laser and it has been a great printer over the years - sits in my office and that is all.

Some older printers use to not have a dedicated black - and so to have nice black print, I preferred the laser. Nowadays don't think that is an issue, but IMO the quality of the two are night and day for regular text print. I have always felt the inkjet "text" printing to be not as crisp plus if it is wet it runs. Further the costs for ink exceed the laserjet costs.

My kids were doing school work and needed color so I bot a J6500 or J6550 (can't remember) and it is a multi-function printer that sits downstairs for them to print things. The funny bit is that the ink (both color + black) costs almost as much as the printer. Supports duplex printing and works via Wireless. I have used the fax a number of times (once I figured out the CRA accepts a FAX I have used that method exclusively).

I was reluctant to buy the HP model at Costco because they had a TRI-COLOR cartridge instead of individual. Read reviews and they were positive enough and for the money $139 after instant rebate I got it. Plus I bot two "DX" combo packs of ink also after instant rebate.

I had an Epson once and will never get an inkjet again from them. They may have smaller dots and better pictures but IMO more time is spent wasting the ink, I mean "cleaning the jets" than actually printing on paper.

In the end it matters what you are doing. If you are printing documents a lot, and want a professional quality output for those documents, laser is the way to go. If you want any form of color then inkjet is probably better.

I do know there are color lasers now and cannot qualify the toner costs. But I believe color lasers cost more for the consumables over the inkjet.

Other than professional reviews, you can't just match ink based on price. Further when you buy a new inkjet these days they include a VERY LITTLE amount of ink in the cartridges. Another reason I went with the Costco printer was that I figured they would stock that more than other inks and if you can buy it at Costco you already are ahead, cost wise. The kids waste ink so the cheaper the better.

Nowadays buying a cheap - sub $200 inkjet and sub $400 laser is nothing.
