Michael, IMP makes user programmable analog integrated circuits. The scheme of making these circuits user definable is the part that is proprietary. It is quite possible for Iomega to go to another chip house and have them make an analog ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) that would perform the same function as the IMP chip but not be even remotely similar in design (i.e., wouldn't violate any proprieties or patents). I suspect that Iomega is going after the custom ASIC solution as it is usually cheaper when you want to obtain very large quantities of chips. The IMP design was actually a very quick solution to Iomega's head amplifier design during a time when it was important to get Zips out into the market. And, besides, the Iomega designers probably didn't have the time necessary to understand the ASIC development process. I suspect the designers finally got around to implementing the ASIC solution.
