Exactly Albert,

You are right on--there is
absolutely nothing special about
wavelets, and Fourier theory and
operation can be modified to achieve
identical results.

At UC we were deciding whether to hire
a wavelet person, and many came to the
conclusion that from a research viewpoint,
wavelet theory was a trivial extension of
fourier, and didnt deserve the type of emphasis
that it was receiving. This is not to say that
there are not some important uses such as in
signal compression, but the claims made by
people that DWMT is far superior to DMT
are simply unfounded.
