On the one hand, one could create a new subject called HTPC on SI.

But OTOH, you will probably get more luck fishing at this site seeing as there are far more with the idea of doing what we want than you would ever get to post on SI.

htpcforums.com

Power consumption is an important factor seeing as electrickery costs are "soaring" and these units have to be on 24/7. Plus the added fans. Power consumption numbers are tricky to find out with the CPU alone but should not be discounted. The newer stuff is faster but also the watts very high - >150W. But older crap too can be high (due to inefficiencies). I believe you do better power wise as soon as you cross into the DUO core world. DUAL core was before that and higher in W (from memory).

In my world the bigger the fan (120mm) the better. Smaller fan = NOISE. That is the problem with a small HTPC - it will be nice and purdy - real small, but you will always hear it if the fan has to be 80mm or smaller. Not sure where we are today with tech, but you may be better off with a larger case, bigger fan all around - don't have to be monster cases but micro cases aren't great if you are struggling to get a half decent video card.

I read about the VIA systems - VIA Mobos with built in CPUs. Would help with costs but found it to be too slow. Might hinder expansion not getting something more mainstream.
