After CHKDSK, You may want to try System File Checker too.

In a Command Window with Administrator privileges, enter the command

SFC /SCANNOW

This will take a minute or two to run. It checks that your system files in use are consistent with the emergency copies Windows keeps around "Just in Case."

Cheers, PW.

P.S. For those who hate installing software, but who also want to know their system is clean, take a look at Microsoft Safety Scanner.

It's an executable file (70MB) you download and run. When done, simply delete it.

As a precaution, the file will only run for 30 days after downloading. Microsoft doesn't want people using old versions.
