Intervista Software Licenses 3D Internet Browser Software To Microsoft Corporation

Making waves, the agreement brings new dimension to a flat surfing experience

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 1997--Intervista Software, Inc., a leading provider of three-dimensional (3D) interactive software for the Internet, announced today that Microsoft will license its WorldView 2.0 software technology, making it the standard platform for experiencing 3D on the Web with Internet Explorer.

Now, for the first time, Web consumers will be able to experience a 3D internet as easily and efficiently as they do in 2D. The agreement paves the way for the next generation of on-line games, entertainment, product demos, product support, collaborative applications, and data visualization all on a three dimensional platform.

Microsoft's decision to incorporate WorldView 2.0 into Microsoft Internet Explorer was the result of an extensive review of 3D platforms. Microsoft's objective is to provide web consumers with the tools necessary to have the most powerful Internet experience possible.

"We are extremely pleased that Microsoft has recognized the superior technology of WorldView 2.0. The agreement with Microsoft moves us closer to making 3D ubiquitous on the web," said Tony Parisi, President and Chief Technology Officer at Intervista Software, Inc. "Users of Internet Explorer will benefit from this collaboration because it will now be easy to see and interact in 3D web sites without having to download plug-ins." Parisi believes that the licensing agreement with Microsoft will further the company's vision of a 3D Internet that brings communities of computer users together in visually compelling, highly interactive virtual environments that are much easier to understand and vastly richer in content that 2D environments.

"Microsoft's licensing of Intervista's VRML 2.0 viewer will allow Internet Explorer users to gain access to and interact with the growing crop of exciting 3D Internet sites," said Kate Seekings, program manager, Microsoft. "Bringing WorldView's VRML technology to Internet Explorer is another major step toward the goal of enabling high-quality 3D content on the Internet."

More About WorldView 2.0

Intervista's technology will help pave the way to a 3D centric Internet offering new forms of visualization and interaction. WorldView 2.0, combines the standard VRML 2.0 technology with Intervista's functional and performance enhancements. Based on Microsoft's ActiveX, the software has been created for complete application integration. Additionally, the software architecture has been optimized for 3D rendering, making it the best performing VRML 2.0 browser available.

For optimum performance, WorldView 2.0 supports DirectX, including the Direct 3D API (application programming interface). By supporting the Microsoft APIs, Intervista not only gains the fastest possible access to the Windows graphics systems, but also will be able to immediately take advantage of new graphics accelerators and multimedia-enhanced processors as they become available. The result of these optimizations are that not only is WorldView faster than the competition today, but it will automatically take advantage of improvements in future display systems. Additionally, WorldView 2.0 supports DirectSound, for 3D spatialized sound, and DirectInput which supports emerging input devices that make navigating 3D environments more natural.

WorldView 2.0 is compatible with other standards such as Java and JavaScript. WorldView 2.0 includes integral support for the Internet standard scripting language, JavaScript, used by content developers to author object behaviors. The software also supports the "External Authoring Interface", the standard API which enables extensions via Java.

WorldView has an intuitive, simplified user interface with powerful navigational tools. The enhanced user interface offers users increased ease-of-use and an improved ability to explore 3D worlds that go well beyond traditional point and click.
