hey bob,
per dell computer, the max amount of ram you can add to the xps166mhz is 32mb for a total of 64mb. i own two of them and upgraded one similarly.
as for the processor, i don't think the mobo will accept more than a 200mhz cpu. i'm kinda' going from memory (no pun) on that. please check.
there is a company called evergreen technologies that sells cpu/mem upgrades on a pci card that i think are kinda' cool. check this post for more skinny

there were several folks on the 'dream' thread that made a point of telling me that this was not a cost effective way to go. the prices they were quoting for new components in lieu of the evergreen upgrade were pretty competitive, and i don't know where they came from. just want you to be aware that you may 'save a few dollars' doing it another way.
as for the option of going new and contacting dell... your question was "any problems with contacting DELL for a new, modern version?"...
i say, heck no! i just ordered another machine from dell today, for a friend. she didn't have a credit card, so dell did an electronic debit to her checking account. my friend and i "built" the machine online, then called a sales rep with a question or two, then placed the order. they quoted us a 1/4 ship date but indicated that they'd probably do better. and i believe 'em. back around mid-november when i ordered a new system for myself, they quoted 4-8 days but it shipped the very next day!
looks like you have some choices, bob. all of them good, too.
keep us posted!
:)
