Bush is at it again. Trying to make the Democrats look bad by using the Straw Man argument. Here's an excerpt from a story on today's AP wire about Bush's energy speech:

"The president said Democrats in the past have urged higher taxes on fuel and price caps to control fuel expenses, but he said neither approach works. Instead, he called for increased conservation, an expansion of domestic production and increased use of alternative fuels like ethanol."

Really? I've been hearing Democrats call for increased use of alternative fuels for quite some time. Bush is only recently getting on that bandwagon, though he only pays lip service to it.

At least he is now calling for repealing the huge giveaway that was passed last year to help the poor, suffering oil companies by giving them massive tax breaks at a time when they were reporting record profits. That was an outrageous move in the face of growing deficits, and it will be good to see it squashed.

On the other hand, I don't see how relaxing environmental standards is supposed to help the situation. Currently, the gas companies use ethanol as an additive to reduce emissions and meet clean air standards. So if they don't add ethanol, that's supposed to reduce prices? Won't that just mean they are using more oil to produce each gallon of fuel?

This administration's energy policy is a travesty.
