IBM Licenses SuperFlash Technology From SST
FISHKILL, N.Y. and SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM - news) and SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.) (Nasdaq: SSTI - news) today announced an agreement in which IBM will license SST's SuperFlash(R) memory technology. This technology will allow IBM to combine logic and memory functions on a single chip, helping electronics manufacturers reduce the size, cost and power consumption of their products.
Unlike standard dynamic memory, ''flash'' memory retains information even after losing power. SST SuperFlash technology will enable IBM to build a new level of memory-efficient custom chips at reduced cost. IBM chose SST's SuperFlash memory because it is designed to allow a much higher volume of information to be programmed and securely stored on the chip. This agreement calls for the use of this technology in IBM's foundry operations, to 0.18 micron and below, and the company is exploring potential applications in ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) as well.
''SST's technology, integrated with IBM's programmable logic capabilities, can help create wireless devices combining highly-sophisticated communications and information processing applications with efficient memory in a very small footprint,'' said Luis Arzubi, general manager, custom logic products, IBM Microelectronics Division. ''We believe that the combination of these advanced technologies will provide a best-of-breed solution for our customers' next generation designs.''
''As one of the world's leading technology companies, IBM's selection of SST's SuperFlash technology for its future product development further validates the scalability of the technology and its long-term viability as the industry moves to smaller and smaller geometries,'' said Bing Yeh, president and chief executive officer of SST. ''The SuperFlash technology overcomes the challenges normally associated with shrinking processes below 0.15 microns, where other technologies begin to break down.''
