I agree with you that we cannot discount the importance of manufacturing capacity as an effective "barrier to entry". That and the ever escalating costs of fabs insulate Intel from stiff competition to a strong degree.

That plus marketing and R&D makes them very tough to knock off in the near future. Last year and article in the WSJ compared Intel's investment in fabs to Std Oil's investment in production capacity at the beginning of this century. It was that investment that secured Std Oil its effective monopoly power.

The biggest stumbling block for Intel in my mind is that PC's are still too complicated to use for the average person. Also, until someone figures how to expand bandwidth, the true growth potential will not be realized.
