That's probably fairly close to the truth. TV programming has gotten to a point where the intended hypnotic effect has reached the stage of being a fine art. The average American is close to being functionally illiterate, and as a result they depend more on TV news than printed media. Those who do spend some time on printed media mostly don't have the ability to sift fact from opinion. And even those who are able to tell fact from opinion don't have the skill to actually analyze and understand the information presented.

The end result is, for the majority, TV news is their only source of information, and they are at the mercy of the owners of the stations. Where the normal process would be to learn all of the facts, then form an opinion, the fact finding process is eliminated completely and the viewers form the opinions they are instructed to form.

Look at some of the banners floating along the bottom of CNN sometime. It's plain old fashion brainwashing. While the viewer is listening to the "news", the message along the bottom is registering without discrimination directed at the content of the second message.

Try this as an experiment. Try to steer a conversation around to 9/11 with the next 5 people you find yourself in casual conversation with. My experience has been that the average person will display some degree of anxiety, from mild to extreme, and then make a rather panicked exit.
