Kerry made two huge mistakes in 2004. The first was that silly salute he gave when he accepted the nomination. The second was the fact that he made no attempt to explain his Vietnam-era anti-war activities. He would have helped himself immensely if he had apologized for the most egregious of his rhetoric from that period, and if he didn't feel that need to apologize, he should have made his case. Instead, he made himself a target for the SwiftVets. I have always believed that for the SwiftVets, their real issue with Kerry was never the minutiae that American Spirit loves to dissect with so much intensity and passion. It was the rhetoric. Reading Kerry's quotes from that period enraged me, and I didn't serve in Vietnam. I can only imagine how it enraged the SwiftVets.

I agree completely. I'll add a third mistake, one that Kerry & the Democrats are still making: seeming to really believe that a background with any military service or sacrifice should provide total innoculation on national security matters. If Murtha, a Marine vet, says the troops should be pulled out, how dare you question him? He's a vet! Never mind the preponderence of opinion among current or former Marines. The innoculation only applies to anti-war spokesmen, whose moral authority is declared to be "absolute," as Maureen Dowd declared about Moonbat Mama Sheehan.
